Green lucerne (alfalfa) field ready for cutting
Lucerne Hay · Yass NSW

Leafy, green, protein-dense lucerne hay, cut at the right stage and shedded the same day.

Lucerne is our flagship hay, high in protein, easy on the eye, and the gold standard for hard-working horses, dairy heifers, sheep on a finishing ration and goats. We grow and source from the Southern Tablelands, cut at early-flower for maximum leaf, and store every bale under cover so it reaches you green, soft and dust-free.

Why our lucerne stands up.

Cut at the right stage

We cut at early flower, not full bloom, that's where the leaf-to-stem ratio peaks and you get the protein you're paying for.

Shedded the same day

Every bale goes straight under cover. No rain, no bleached tops, no mould risk. Bales open green and smell like a freshly mown paddock.

Quality you can see

Tight, even bales. Soft to the hand. Leafy throughout, not just on the outside. Inspect on delivery and tell us if it's not what we promised.

Lucerne Hay: questions buyers ask

Can you feed too much lucerne hay to horses?
Lucerne is high in protein and calcium and energy-dense, so it's possible to overdo it, especially with easy keepers or laminitic horses. Most working horses benefit from a mix of lucerne and a grass hay (oaten or pasture). For overweight or metabolic horses, lean on oaten or low-sugar pasture hay and use lucerne as a top-up.
Is lucerne hay the same as alfalfa?
Yes. Lucerne is the Australian and British name for the legume Medicago sativa. In North America it's called alfalfa. Same plant, same nutritional profile.
What's the going rate for a bale of lucerne hay in NSW?
Small squares typically run $27–$35 across the Southern Tablelands, with premium leafy bales at the top of that range. Round bales sit around $220–$280 and large 8x4x3 squares $400–$500. Delivery rates depend on distance.
How long will a bale last one horse?
Roughly seven to ten days for an average 500kg horse on full lucerne, less if they're hard-working. Most people stretch a bale much further by mixing lucerne with oaten or pasture hay.
Do you sell second-grade or weather-affected lucerne?
Occasionally we have second-grade lucerne available at a discount, usually slightly bleached or rain-affected but still sound for cattle and dry stock. Call Paul to check current stock.
